JaWanda's Sweet Potato Pies is a family owned bakery that relies strongly on their faith for success. JaWanda was raised in Alabama and has a true love for good ole southern cooking and hospitality. Her mother taught her at an early age how to satisfy a hungry appetite in the kitchen. At the age of 9 years old not only was she cooking for her mother and bringing her breakfast in bed, but she was preparing lunch meals for the neighborhood children she taught Bible Class to on her front porch. Years went by and she continued to cultivate her cooking skills by trying new recipes quite often. She enjoys cooking southern style foods like fried chicken, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, and crusty cream cheese pound cake for both her sons Je'Niah and Jeremiah. Her favorite meal, both, to eat and prepare is chicken and dressing, turnip greens, potato salad, rice and beef casserole, candied yams, and sweet potato pie.
Sweet Potato Pie is a dessert she learned to bake after marrying her husband (Eddie) of 31 plus years. Shortly after they were married she started preparing them for him because it is his favorite dessert. As a result of his rave review, family and friends started requesting them. She later began to take hundreds of pies to markets and would sell out. In addition to purchasing JaWanda's pies at her store front location, they are available at several grocery store locations. Her store front location is in the Inverness Village Shopping area at 5291 Valleydale Road, Birmingham, AL. Here she serves 15 different flavors of sweet potato pies including the original, pecan, orange cream cheese, and s'mores, along with her mother's peach cobbler recipe, and other southern desserts such as pound cakes, blackberry peach cobbler, and more.
When you walk in the door you get that aroma, taste, and hospitality like being in your grandma's kitchen. JaWanda's Sweet Potato Pies is rated 5 Star, and has been named the #1 pie shop in the state of Alabama. Their goal is to always serve you "A Taste of Heaven"!
